Contest Overview

Netbook-mondays-logo Whether you're already built something that uses Twilio, or you've just discovered our simple and powerful API for voice-enabling your applications, we hope you'll enter to win a Netbook - we're giving one away every week!

Our contest is as simple as Twilio itself, every Monday we announce a "theme" to help guide your ideas for what to build and you have one week to build and submit your project.   On the following Monday we announce the winner and send them a Netbook, and any other prizes from our contest partners.

Week #24 & #25 Category: Twilio for Salesforce, with Appirio

How can you help your customers streamline their business processes, convert leads, and take their company to the next level using Twilio plus Salesforce?  For the next two weeks, we've teamed up with Salesforce and Appirio for what promises to be one of our most exciting developer challenges yet.

With the help of Kyle Roche and Aslam Bari from Appirio, Twilio is now available for development on Force.com, the Salesforce development platform.  The Appirio team has implemented the Twilio API in APEX, which is the force.com backend language, so get ready to build scalable reliable voice and communications apps on the leading platform for business apps and website

Amazon Web Services - Ask-a-Human by Eugene Osovetsky

By combining Twilio with Amazon Mechanical Turk, Ask-a-Human allows anyone with a caller-ID-enabled phone to call a toll-free number, submit the question, and then get called back with the answer.  Ask-a-Human uses two incoming Twilio numbers (a toll-free one for the question submitters, and a toll one for the Mechanical Turk answer submitters). The application is written on ASP.NET, and is completely stateless (with all state being handled by Twilio and MTurk).

Robert-mclaws Congratulations to Robert McLaws, who resubmitted from Week 5 to win the Week 13 Netbook prize! Robert built a Twilio WCF REST Client Library for .NET 3.5, which he describes as, "a strongly-typed .NET API to build rich, robust services against Twilio's platform".

The library helps developer productivity by reducing the learning curve by eliminating the need to learn the ins and outs of Twilio's system, and provides a discoverable, thoroughly-documented, IntelliSense-backed API library, as well as a sample Console application to get you up and running quickly.

Coordinating People - Simple Hotline by John Sheehan

With Simple Hotline, John Sheehan can alert the members of his softball league when inclement weather hits and a game is rained out.

Outbound Notifications & Alerts - PagerDuty by Andrew, Alex, and Baskar at Synchronicity Labs


PagerDuty is a tool to help manage on-call staff and set alarms to escalate tickets through the appropriate channels. Forward alerts from your existing monitoring systems (Nagios, RightScale, etc.) to Pager Duty, configure your on-call schedule and business rules for escalation, and PagerDuty takes care of notifying your team members.

With Twilio, PagerDuty offers voice notifications in addition to their SMS and email alerts. If you specify to receive an alert by phone, the contents of the alert are read aloud and the call recipient has the choice to suppress or resolve the ticket.


Outbound Notifications & Alerts - RemindMe by Kurtis Welch

Kurtis-welch RemindMe is a personal productivity tool that enables callers to create and receive notifications over the phone with voice.

When you call in, the service uses LavaRock to interpret the date and time you want to schedule your reminder, and records your then voice message.  On the assigned date and time you'll receive a call and your voice reminder recording is played back to you.


Killer Marketing Tools - Twilleetio by Trevor Smith

The category for Week #2 was "Killer Marketing Tools", and Trevor killed it with this tool for phoning in short audio segments and sharing them with Twitter.

To try out Twilleetio, dial (206) 455-6221, and use passcode 4422. Leave a message, and when you are prompted choose to tweet it. Then visit the Twilleetio Twitter account, to see a link to the audio file and a transcription of the call.

Improving Customer Service - RepeaterStore by Brendan Gill

RepeaterStore is a leading e-commerce storefront focused on selling wireless repeaters; those little devices that make your iPhone work inside your apartment (where you get no coverage).

Using Twilio, RepeaterStore now enables customers to pick up their phone (landline, probably) and call-in to enter their order ID and automatically retrieve their tracking number and detailed order status. If a package hasn't been delivered yet, customers receive an expected delivery date and can even select to have the details emailed with just the press of a button.
